I’m back in the country after a couple of months in the sun, and hoping that you’ll be able to come to some of my gigs.
Sunday April 13th 10.30am to 1 pm. Jazz Brunch for Oxfam at Bakewell, Medway Centre
Steve Salfield Quartet with me on saxes, together with brilliant musicians Wendy Kirkland on keyboard, Pat Sprakes on bass and Clive Loveday on drums.
We’ll be playing some jazz standards and mellow Sunday morning jazz.
A sumptuous continental breakfast with tea, coffee, croissants, cheeses, cold meats and more is included.

This regular monthly gig on the third Thursday of each month started last year and has been going on in my absence during the last couple of months with guest sax and flute players. Now the wonderful Pete Moxley on keyboard, brilliant Graham Jones on double bass and I (what can I say?) will continue. The food and beer at the Druid are excellent. Having a meal is optional, you can just enjoy the pub. Hope you can make it. Entry is free
On Thursday June 19th, Friday June 20th, Saturday June 21st Dorothy Parker is back in Guildford at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and at Lytham St Annes on Thursday June 26th.
Following three sellout shows in the famous Yvonne Arnaud theatre in September 2013, we’re delighted that we’ve been booked for another three showings of David Frederickson’s brilliant new play about the writer Dorothy Parker. “You might as well live” is performed by Sue Daniels and the Steve Salfield Trio featuring Graham Jones on double bass and Matt Ratcliffe on piano with me on tenor sax.

A show featuring the words, wisdom and wisecracks of one of America’s foremost jazz age writers. Dorothy Parker’s short stories and journalism are characterised by rapier wit and her poems by melancholy and aching vulnerability. Her pen frequently upset the literary establishment and provided an acerbic commentary on life in inter-war America. She was a very rude and very funny lady.
She was active in cultural politics on the west coast, setting up the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League and (with Lillian Hellmann and Dashiel Hammett) the Screenwriters’ Guild. She also visited and wrote about Spain during the Civil War, supporting the efforts of the Republican Government to provide basic education for their people. Of course, she ended up on Senator McCarthy’s Hollywood blacklist which, she said, severely curtailed her earning power. But it didn’t stop her telling it like she thought it was.
Dorothy Parker will be accompanied on stage by the Steve Salfield Trio playing the music of the twenties and thirties. She will fill you in on her life, her loves and her views on the writers and cultural icons of her day.

The annual art exhibition, part of Winster Wakes, is organised by Jacquie Salfield and by coincidence she books the Steve Salfield Trio to play in this lovely space.

Meanwhile The Jet Collective continues work on our recording of JetStream, original new music inspired by climate and weather. It’s going well and I’ll let you know when you can hear it.
