The Steve Salfield Jazz Quartet is a very popular jazz group based in Derbyshire, Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby. The band comprises me on tenor and soprano saxophones together with some of my friends who are excellent jazz musicians. We live in Derbyshire, Yorkshire, and Sheffield but we are happy to travel just about anywhere.
I am the sax player and the quartet also has piano or guitar, double bass and drums. The Steve Salfield Jazz Trio is the same but without drums and the Steve Salfield Jazz Duo is sax and piano or sax and guitar.
I prefer to play with various different musicians on different occasions rather than the same lineup every time. I feel that this keeps the music fresh and exciting: dangerous even at times.
We play a wide range of music. Sometimes we will be playing well known standards from the jazz repertoire and another time it will be some original compositions or our arrangements of popular songs, folk music, wedding songs or how the mood takes us.
My jazz band has played at all kinds of venues and occasions. We have had regular gigs in restaurants, bars and jazz clubs. We have played at numerous weddings, dinners, birthdays, parties.
In recent years our Jazz Breakfasts or Jazz Brunches on Sunday mornings have been very successful, attracting large audiences of all ages. These have been held in village halls in several Derbyshire villages and are generally sold out.
