Sheffield for music in round at lunchtime, Crucible Studio

Ensemble 360 were fantastic.

Fritz Kreisler. Praeludium and Allegro beautifully played by Benjamin Nabarro violin and Viv McLean guest pianist. A musical hoax. Kreisler pretending that the music had been written by the far more famous 18 th century Pugnani as a way of getting it performed. He owned up 25 years later that he himself had written it. Apparently this was quite a common trick in the early 1900s.
Nicolo Paganini. Variations on O mamma, mamma cara. This was very entertaining and a piece of virtuoso playing by Nabarro. Try and get the score.
Sergei Rachmaninov – Vocalise. Originally written for wordless voice and then rearranged for many other instruments this was played by Matthew Hunt on alto saxophone. Nice piece that Pete and I could play.
Ferrucino Busoni toccata for piano. Tim Horton. This piece was less easy to enjoy. However Tim Hortons playing is absolutely superb – world class.
Franz Liszt Tristia – vallee d’Obermann for violin, cello and piano. Beautiful music beautifully played.
