An Evening with Dorothy Parker
A show featuring the words, wisdom and wisecracks of one of America’s foremost jazz age writers and some of the classic jazz tunes of the time played live.
Dorothy Parker’s poems, short stories and reviews provide an acerbic commentary on life in inter-war America and her work frequently upset the literary establishment. She was active in cultural politics on the west coast, setting up the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League and (with Lillian Hellmann) the Screenwriters’ Guild. She also wrote about Spain during the Civil War, supporting the efforts of the Republican Government to provide basic education for their people. Of course, she ended up on Senator McCarthy’s Hollywood blacklist which, she said, severely curtailed her earning power, but didn’t stop her telling it like she thought it was. She died in 1967 leaving her estate to Dr Martin Luther King.
Dorothy Parker will fill you in on her life, her loves and much else besides – accompanied by the cool jazz sound of the Steve Salfield Trio. We are only playing three venues in this short autumn tour – so book now:
